Unto the Webministers of the East Kingdom, Greetings.
This notification is being published to document the updates described below.
     
Tool/Service:  All East Kingdom Websites
Impacted
Areas:
 All East Kingdom Websites hosted on the East Kingdom Server.
Description:

All websites have been updated to allow https:// connections and should start to be the main address used for accessing the sites.

Why do we need HTTPS? In order to stay up to date with the current global standards and keep our server secure, this move is necessary to protect our data and access to our services.

If you do a search for https in your favorite search engine (like Google, for instance) you will find thousands of hits about what it is.

IMPACT TO WEBMINISTERS:

There should be no impact regarding this update for the use of your websites. The implementation has been setup to allow both http:// and https:// connections to them.

However, when you use the Virtualmin login at https://[localbranch].eastkingdom.org:10000 you may get a NOT SECURE message. For example:

Please know that the service is secure. But, if you are still wary of this warning, you should use the updated main Virtualmin login site found at:

https://host.eastkingdom.org:10000 with your normal login credentials. DO NOT REPLACE ‘host’ with anything, this is the correct link.

You will not see the Not Secure warning.

Going forward, this will be the preferred and recommended way to access your Virtualmin Portal.

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE NOTIFICATION

Unto the Populace of the East Kingdom, Greetings. This notification is being published to document the situation below, and request assistance.

At the Curia Regis held in at the Great Northeastern War (GNEW), the Order of the Golden Mantle was made an Order of High Merit, and the Order of Artemis was merged within this elevated recognition.

This means that all Companions of both Orders (now one) have a voice that can be heard by the Crown for future recommendations to grow the Order.

The Discussion and Polling Listserv have been set up for this, as is the policy of the East Kingdom.

However, we do not have a listing of your contact information to add you to these Lists and need your help!

You may Register for access to the Discussion List here: https://lists.eastkingdom.org:10000/virtualmin-mailman/unauthenticated/listinfo.cgi/discuss-ogm and can begin communicating with the Royals as well as the other Companions of your Order once approved.

There is no Moderator for this Discussion List yet, so if you would also like to volunteer for that position, please let me know directly at discuss-ogm@lists.eastkingdom.org so that I may set you up. Until a Moderator is determined, I will be verifying your access to the List.

To be added to the Polling List, which is where the notifications of a new Polling is distributed through, please contact the Clerk of the Polling Lists at polling@eastkingdom.org to be added after being verified.

9/20/16 – Planned Maintenance

East Kingdom Informational Notification

The East Kingdom Server will undergo a planned upgrade during the late evening of Tuesday, 10/4/2016.

We will be upgrading the server to PHP version 5.6.x from our current level. This is required to keep the security of our available resources and continue to offer a solid end user experience.

Time Frame 10:00pm-1:30am Eastern Time

This is expected to run for 144 minutes. (I am giving it extra time in case anything happens and a recover is required.)

During this time frame some East Kingdom services may be unavailable to the populace.

Tools that backbone or pull from the server will also be affected (IE: Email, Help Desk, List Server, etc).

Most improvements in PHP 5.6.x have no impact on existing code.

What are the differences?
  • There will be some backward incompatible changes

  • Deprecated features in PHP 5.6.x

Will
this break stuff?

Only if current code is written in a way to affect the backward incompatible changes, the deprecated features, or the listed changes to other functions and extensions.

If you are concerned that your code may be affected by this upgrade, please take a look at the PHP migration website at http://php.net/migration56 and contact the Webministry before the proposed date above.

How it works 1. The PHP migration is performed on the server.
You may experience downtime while the server is migrated. We estimate 144 minutes to migrate the code, but that may vary based on host and network load.

2. Enjoyment.
After the migration completes, all services should be running on the PHP 5.6.x backbone.

8/17/16 Maintenance Complete

East Kingdom Informational Notification

The East Kingdom Server successfully went through a planned upgrade during the evening
of Tuesday, 8/16/2016 between 11:00 pm and 11:50 pm.

We have expanded the available Server Memory (RAM) from  16 GB to 24 GB which will allow up to further support the needs of the Kingdom.

East Kingdom Informational Notification

The East Kingdom Server successfully went through a planned upgrade during the evening
of Wednesday, 4/6/2016 between 9:00 pm and 9:50 pm.

“The long and short of it is that we’re upgrading our server – gaining double the memory, 33% more processing power and doubling our hard drive space. Much of that should be trivial, even transparent, but resizing the disk can take a while and can’t be done while the server is in use.

While the everyday impact of this shouldn’t be obvious, it will allow us to add more features and provide more services in general. Behind the scenes, we’ll also experience fewer recurring issues (we’ve been bumping up against memory limitations more and more as time goes on, which sometimes results in database issues that can affect different sites and
applications).
There are some interesting and useful things planned that will take advantage of this upgrade, so keep an eye out :)”

4/4/16 – Planned Maintenance

East Kingdom Informational Notification

The East Kingdom Server will undergo a planned upgrade during the late evening of Wednesday, 4/6/2016.


This is the third in a series of planned updates this year. (The second update did not require an interruption of services, and was performed last Thursday.)


We will be migrating from our current level of service “Linode 8GB” to the next tier of service “Linode 16GB” with the same Hosting service, which will appear to be seamless to the populace. This will be expanding our available resources and offer a better user experience.

Time Frame 9:00pm-12:30am Eastern Time

This is expected to run for 144 minutes. (I am giving it extra time in case anything happens and a recover is required.)

During this time frame all East Kingdom services will be unavailable to the populace.

Tools that backbone or pull from the server will also be affected (IE: Email, Help Desk, List Server, etc).

Upgrading an existing deployment to a new and larger plan should not affect the current state of the information on your Linode. This will happen automatically, until you resize the new disks.

How it works 1. Linode is shut down and migrated
You will experience downtime while your Linode is migrated. We estimate 144 minutes to migrate your Linode, but that may vary based on host and network load.2. Enjoyment
After the migration completes, you can take advantage of the new resources by resizing your disks.

This is being sent to notify you of the (HIGH) Severity event(s) below. Because of the possible large impact of such events, this is being documented to avoid an increase in contact volume.

Description: We have uncovered a coding issue with an upgrade of the Wiki server that does not work with non-English characters, causing pages to “disappear” and were not accessible to the Populace.

All attempts to fix the Latin-1 vs UTF-8 coding differences were unsuccessful and we have had to revert to a previous database backup prior to the upgrade, which is 5 days old.
